What firmware are you trying to put on it?
What error msg do you get?

I dont know. it wont boot. it turns on; no sound or video. 30 seconds later it shuts down. recovery is all i can get it to do.

Re: 80gb ps3 wont update.. even in recovery??

No offense man but I look to be the only one trying to help you and it seems like you have an attitude about it (hard to get tone online of course)

that said if you can get to recovery its most likely recoverable
bad part is we dont know what firmware it was on pre messup....

tell me what it does with the lights when you try to turn it on.
also what firmware pup you are trying to use...
last time it was working
have you looked into using a sony service jig?
be careful using a sony jig over 3.41 hard to get out of service mode

Edit:
Just brushed up on service mode dont do it on 3.56+
3.55 and down should be fine otherwise you have no way to get out of service mode since we dont have lv2.diag

Re: 80gb ps3 wont update.. even in recovery??

it pretends to start normal, its react to cds just fine, but after 30 seconds, it powers off. like holding the power button on a computer. every time i use recovery to update, it asks for 4.0 or higher, if that helps..

what about this?

Re: 80gb ps3 wont update.. even in recovery??

Yeah thats what i was talking about basically a ps3 jig .....jig is still needed if you cant get to xmb.....

you say it boots fine... so you can get to xmb (the home screen) for about 30 secs?
If so check and see what system software (firmware) is listed on it that would help me out a lot knowing whats on it....

If it is asking for 4.0 or above sounds like a problem.
Are you any good with sodering?

also dont use that jig if youre not sure of what firmware is on it because 3.56+ we cant get out of service mode

Re: 80gb ps3 wont update.. even in recovery??

you could do a couple of thing update to 4.00 get a hardware flasher and flash it back down to 3.55

try plugging controller in with a usb cable see if that works

Re: 80gb ps3 wont update.. even in recovery??

is it a phat or slim? looking for an e3 flasher
service jig can be made from any flash stick
if it wont take anything but 4.00 update just update it to the lowest firmware you can.....then use a hardware flasher...
