Any CFW is fine, they emulate all the features that that same OFW does plus more. If you want to play a game that requires a higher firmware, then you can update to something higher. I personally only upgraded to 3.52 M33-4 so far.

I watched the video; really straight forward and helpful. What is NAND? How do I back it up? Do I need to format my stick before making it a magic stick? Can I still play real copies of games I've already bought once I've done this homebrew thing?

How and at what point do I install the CFW and to where? Can I just install the CFW 3.90 M33 straight or do I have to downgrade to 1.50 somehow?
