does creating a partition on my hd lower the total space?

hey i was wandering if i create a partition on my hd will lower my primary drive's total space? Because i gotta laptop and the total space is 40gig but u always get less like with the factory mem stick u get from sony say 32mb but the psp says 30mb.

Yeah, but all HDs and memory come with less space than advertised because they have software or drivers or something, but paratitioning it shouldnt lower it substantially.

so what happens is your drive is actually as big as they tell you. But essentially a Table of Contents is created on your disk. So depending how big the disk is it takes more space for this TOC.

From my experience i dont THINK that multiple partitions take any additional space away. Sometimes there is a meg left over because i chose weird partition sizes... but thats it.

the total space of all your partitions, no.

I have my drive partitioned, and I have no loss in space. I used Partition Magic.

no the total the space of my PRIMARY HD not the partitions, so does it lower the total space of my primary hd?

your partitions will add up to your total space you can use. (total hd - TOC stuff)

u guys arent getn it, DOES IT LOWER THE PRIMARY HDS SPACE NOT THE PARTITIONS TOTAL SPACE the DRIVES TOTAL SPACE
