I almost fixed a 60gb PS3 YLOD

So, I personally own a 60gb PS3. Love the damn thing. In any sense, my boss' son broke his 60gb PS3 somehow, and it got the dreaded YLOD. I tried swapping parts and all that, troubleshooting different guides, and even broke out the multi-meter. Then I tried something a little more ballsy.

I used a heat gun. One that can crank up to 590 degrees Celsius. I used it at about 300C and "cooked" the processor and RSX, as well as the circuits surrounding them. Lo-and-behold, when I reassembled the unit, it actually powered on, did NOT give the YLOD, and worked for about one minute before giving me the old 3-beep chirp, YLOD, and powering off.

I'll be busting out the heat gun again tomorrow and seeing if I can revive her ;)

Itd be funny, if every time this happened and you fixed it, it went back to the YLOD after a minute. Like, itd be funny, but suck too, at the same time haha.

Re: I almost fixed a 60gb PS3 YLOD

Ive done the same thing. I heat mine upto 500F do the top side first, then let it cool for 15 minutes. Flip it over do the same to that side and let it cool. Clean the CPU/GPU with rubbing alcohol, and then apply thermal compound. Reassemble and your good to go. Now my PS3 lasted about a month before it yold again, I did the same procedure above and about a week later it yold again. So after reflowing the board a third time I did not put the top cover back on, easy access when it does it again. I've reflowed the mobo about 6 times. After the 6th time it doesn't work anymore turns on than overheats and shutdown.

close numbers? it's happened to me a lot.
I remember once, I was at this carnival held at the American Int School in Jeddah, and it was for some car, and the guy is calling out numbers and I'm standing up with a big smile, and THEN he says the last number as something else :@

Never was able to fully fix this subject. It worked for a few weeks at a time, each time. Re-flowed 4 times total.

Re: I almost fixed a 60gb PS3 YLOD

I even extended the cable that connects the bluray drive to the mobo, and set it to the side for my ps3 to run cooler. Still overheats in 2-3 mins.
