Description:
Homebrew developer FreePlay just found a couple of interesting things about the official theme files released by Sony for PlayStation Portable FW 3.70. Over at QJ.NET PSP Development Forum, the coder announced that he was able to split them into their various sections and learned that they are not encrypted.
While FreePlay is still uncertain what the sections are exactly, he added that he knows for sure that the files are equal to or less than 512 KB in size and that they can be edited without corrupting the theme. The developer mentioned as well that all these files can be found in the PSP's flash but he is unable to determine if they are in 0, 1, 2, or 3.
To be able to unravel more things about the official theme files, FreePlay came up with an application known as PSP Official Theme File Splitter. He said that this program is for those who want to look at the files and help in the development. Another thing he learned using this program is that there's no checksumon the data in the theme header.
Information is still vague about the above mentioned sections (they all have the same first two bytes [0xD9, 0x6B] preceded by either 0x05, 0x06, or 0x07 and followed by a header that is different depending on the section type) but FreePlay said that he was able to do the following:
You can pad on as much data as you want, random or otherwise, up to exactly 512KB. You can even replace bits of one theme with bits of another so long as the stuff you're replacing is bigger than the stuff you're copying over it and you null out the trailing data to the end of the section.
For example, I copied the "classy pink" icon over the "cookies" icon and it showed up with the "classy pink" icon in the theme selector.
Aside from the program PSP Official Theme File Splitter, the download package below also includes the two currently existing themes for testing purposes. The application doesn't come with a documentation so it would be wise to consult other users before using it through the forum link below.
