Description:
Ok, this is one of those developer-only news, so bear with me if you don't quite understand this article. TyRaNiD, the creator of PSPLINK, has updated his program PSP Packer.
PSP Packer is an application to compress your PBPs to save space. Only on 1.0 and 1.5, though. The great advantage of this is that you can easily reduce the size of your application. But knowing TyRaNiD, it would be incomplete without a killer feature.
And it does have one great feature. You can actually run your PRX-based application, right from the XMB, or more commonly known as the Main Menu with the icons. So if you're thinking of making a PRX module, you can actually skip the main PBP file and use your module just by packing it with this app.
Plus, it patches the PSP's memory so that even user mode modules can use the Module Loading functions. Until now, you needed to have kernel mode to use the Module Loading functions.
Now if you're not a developer, I'll give you a better example. If you've peeked under iR Shell's hood, you'll notice that the Screenshot and MP3 Player functions are handled using PRX modules. The main advantage of PRX modules is that you can run them in the background. Think of how you can listen to your MP3s while playing a UMD Game. That's accomplished by making the MP3 player as a module and running it in the background. Although I currently don't know any app which uses this, it does open cool possibilities. How about not having to start iR Shell to listen to your MP3s? Yep, it could be possible.
The Windows binary (exe) has been given for download below. If you want to use it on any other platform, you can download the source from the PS2DEV svn and compile it yourself. The documentation has been attached. Make sure to read it.
