Does Firmware version change after installing homebrew

I installed the homebrew channnel right before the Oct 23 update. My firmware was 3.3U. I updated the Wii firmware and my firmware version still says 3.3U. I can access the WiiShop channel, so I'm guessing the update worked. Does the firmware version change while homebrew is installed?
