Dwarf Fortress
Well, I don't know how many of you have heard of this game, or how many will even try to get into it, BUT:
"Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world."
It's a top-down Sims-esque kind of game, except with dwarves and lava. It takes a while to get used to playing it, but this tutorial helped me out a ton: http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/ ... art-1-wtf/

That's right, a settlement named Boatmurdered. Easily one of the best succession play games out there.
